On The Line

Certificate: PG Produced by: Peter Abrhams Directed by: Eric bross Starring: Lance Bass, Emmanuelle Chiriqui, Joey Fatone

On the Line is a good vehicle for 'N Sync's Lance Bass, who makes his star-producer debut. It's brought to us from the same team as She's All That. . Bass plays a Chicago adman who meets the girl of his dreams (newcomer Emmanuelle Chriqui) on the "L" train but fails to get her name and phone number (always a terrible mistake boys!). It's a simple story of love at first sight, boy loses girl and tries to find her again. All the while his friends (including 'N Sync bandmate Joey Fatone) try to "help" him but only get him into more trouble. He must then win his dream girl back.

I liked the soundtrack which features N'Sync (naturally) and Britney Spears. The highlight for me was the appreciation for the music of Al Green (who makes one of several celebrity cameos). In particular I loved his performance of "Take Me to the River" (written by the Rev. Al and M. Hodges and covered many times since by artists including Talking Heads, Foghat, Bryan Ferry and Levon Helm.

On the Line was cleaned-up for a younger audience and the dubbing of crude language was badly done (sometimes apparently by non-English speaking actors). The only other thing that irritated me was the level of product placement in the film - McDonalds and Pepsi featuring very strongly.

On the Line is a wholesome film with good music and deserved to do better at the box office. As a debut for Lance Bass it augurs well.
