What is the St. George's Committee?

Why do we need a St. George's Committee?

It is OK to celebrate St.Andrew's Day in Scotland, St. David's Day in Wales and of course St. Patrick's Day is celebrated virtually everywhere! Many of us join in these celebrations. St. George, the Patron Saint of England, is ignored by the media, by our schools and our political establishment. This is a part of the destruction of England. They simply pretend that there is no such thing as English culture.

We in the St. George's Committee want to revive knowledge of and celebration of St. George and his Day. We want to stress that the attempt to help this revival of the feast day of England's Patron Saint is inclusive. We support the other feast days of the home nations and anyone, whatever their background, is welcome to join us.

But isn't all this too Nationalistic and inward-looking?

Well, the short answer is no. St. George is in fact not only our Patron Saint but also (amongst other things) of Aragon, Agricultural workers, Boy Scouts, Butchers, Canada, Catalonia, Ferrara, Italy, Genoa, Italy, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Istanbul. Lithuania, Moscow, Palestine, Palestinian Christians, Portugal and Venice. Pretty international! Also we believe that if people are confident in and knowledgeable about their own culture they are more likely to respect that of others and understand the links and similarities which underly many myths and traditions.

Who is involved?

We welcome members from all backgrounds who support our aims. We have members who are also members of the Conservative Party, New Labour, Green, Third Way and Liberal. Most of our members don't belong to any Party.

What kind of activities do you organise?

We organise parties around St. George's Day, an annual dinner at Christmas, groups to put on shows at local fetes and parades and much more. Our emphasis is developing family friendly social gatherings.

How do I join?

Forward the princely sum of £2.50 (£5 for family membership) made out to the 'St. George's Committee'. You will receive a card and regular bulletins and notices of events. Send to: St. George's Committee, P O Box 48, Hornchurch, Essex, RM12 4PJ.
